Inventors and Inventions

2026 Free Sci-Fi& Fantasy Reads SEPTEMBER1080X1350

Inventions are never divorced from the problems the inventors were trying to solve. Both inventors and their creations are shaped by their cultures and individual environments. It’s not a surprise that seemingly identical inventions pop up almost simultaneously around the world. The ideas “come to mind” at the same moments in human history, driven by similar cultural pressures and similar problems. Language, agriculture, stone tools, paper, books, calculus, electricity, and even lightbulbs roll over human populations like waves. Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. And inventions build on each other — one doesn’t really need agriculture until hunting and gathering becomes unsustainable; one can’t develop metal weapons prior to discovering how to smelt; one doesn’t need writing until the population gets large enough that transactions need to be recorded (yes, the first “stories” were spreadsheets); ); one can’t have lightbulbs until there’s electricity to power them. We live in an age characterized by an accelerated pace of discovery. One can no longer superficially know all there is to know, not to mention mastering it. And, arguably, one of the most civilization-changing discoveries is upon us — artificial intelligence. Whether or not the algorithms we call AIs are truly conscious…

Change

Lizard_Girl_and_Ghost-Cover-Front

We mark the passage of time through personal milestones and seasonal holidays. Another major marker is bearing down on us — December! All the gift giving, family gatherings, end-of-year parties, and toasting mark another round trip around our star. We are on a continuous ride through time and space. We are never at the same place at the same time. Our lives are flux personified. Change is the thing that lives are made of. Humans hate change. We always yearn for the good old days even as we don’t remember them personally and even when we totally misunderstand history. Nostalgia is big. Change seems bad. I get it. I’d rather go the same old restaurant, order the same food, and wear the same comfortable clothing year after year. When my favorite store closes, I take it personally. When my neighborhood changes, I take it as an affront. I want things stable and familiar. I don’t want to spend my mental resources learning useless-to-me new ways of doing things. And I have a sense that most people are more like me than not, given that we all fall somewhere on the spectrum of hating novelty to needing it. So when the…

First Lines

unreal reality

There are readers (and book-writing gurus) who want the first few words of the story to grab them so hard that they can’t let go until the end. I thought I felt a little this way too, so I started to pay attention to the first sentences of the books I read. Strangely, most were quite plain. It took time to get into the story, to fall in love with it. Some books, which I absolutely adore, required my attention for at least the first few chapters before love blossomed. That felt contrary to every writing advice I’ve read. But I did notice that while falling in love with the story might take a bit of time, strong dislike can be achieved in just a few sentences! We might relate to stories the way we relate to people. There is a ton of research that points to the human ability to judge one another — we can tell if the teacher is any good in the first 30 seconds! And our opinions don’t change, staying quite stable after an hour, a day, a week, and even after a year’s worth of instruction. That’s an evolutionary advantage — it’s good to…

New Book: Lizard Girl and Ghost

Lizard Girl & Ghost

This is probably the strangest story I’ve ever written. The idea for the book came from reading endless articles on “singularity” — what would it really mean to pour one’s soul into the machine? What are some implications? What would it feel like? So this story is a cyberpunk adventure into life beyond death as we know it. I hope you’ll give it a try. Here are the first few chapters.
