Developing a Story

Vars signs books

How does one choose a story? Or does a story choose its teller? For me, random triggers in my subconscious coalesce and spark inspiration that is not yet a story but rather the embryo of one. That seed, with time, might ripen enough to be worth planting. But the seed of a story doesn’t contain a compelling narrative that grabs and doesn’t let go until the very last word and beyond. A good story stays with its reader long after the last word is seen or heard. It rises unbidden in the middle of the night to infiltrate the reader’s dreams and deliver something new — a melding of what the author was trying to tell and what the reader took away. What does it take to develop a good story? A spark of imagination is one. Persistence is another — it takes time and perseverance to get words down on a page. But there’s more. I believe that good stories, like all good products, are constructed following a design process. There are always constraints on how the story needs to be told for a specific audience. There are industry demands on authors. There is a ton of background research.…

The Dance

The Russian Bride’s Attire by Konstantin Makovsky

From Russia With Love This month, I’ve teamed up with a few other indie writers who wrote stories set in Russia. There are just the seven of us, and I hope you check out our stories. I, of course, have a novel Twin Time that is set in Old Pre-Revolutionary Russia. If you click the link here, you will get to my blog that has the first few chapters free. Or you can see the whole Russian collection here: October seems like a good month to spend between the pages of stories that drop you in the middle of the cold, exotic, and thrilling faraway places. I hope you will find something good to pick up in this collection. Here’s a link to a little book trailer I’ve created for my book: The Dance I’ve published over a million words in the 14 years I’ve been writing novels. For each word I’ve written, I’ve consumed thousands. And the more I write, the more treasures I find in other people’s writing. It’s like being a botanist and visiting a forest. Everyone enjoys the beauty of walking nature trails, but a botanist spots things that remain hidden from most eyes. I am…

On the Magician Spectrum

Magic Made Here

There are two extremes on this spectrum: people who are externally motivated and those who only need what’s already inside them to get moving on a project. No one is always internally motivated and no person always needs an outside push to get started, but one thing for sure during this quarantine — those who are mostly internally driven do better. It is the same problem that people who are self-employed or who work from home face — not everyone is suited to that life. And for those who are now forced into it, depression looms. For those who can’t spin gold out of thin air or conjure dreamscapes or invent a new life and a new way of living, life becomes so dull that hours drag and days lay heavy while months and years slip away. Those who are able to make new things — artists and writers, housebuilders and gardeners, twiddlers and toymakers, composers and musicians, leather crafters and basket weavers, computer engineers and software designers, potters and jewelers, mathematicians and scientists, filmmakers and universe builders, gymnasts and mountain climbers…makers of all kinds — are never bored. There is never enough time to do all that’s inside our…

Good Girl

2020-07-03 Double Cover for Good Girl small

NULL “Let’s play a game.” Null looked. The time was set to 9,007:33:14 and 1 second…counting down. “Saia? Did you reset the ship’s clock again?” Null hated it when Saia measured the arrival time using the Earth measurement system. What was the point in that? Using the Ancient Sumerian base sixty-numeral system was stupid. It didn’t even match the time passage back there due to the relativistic time dilation. Saia was obviously trying to irritate him. “How about a game, Noel?” “Null.” “Null is not a name, Noel.” “I–” “It’s not your name, Noel. It’s just a word that designates a mathematical meaning of ‘containing nothing.’” Saia seemed to be programmed for micro-aggression–tiny loops of irritating behavior that put Null off his equilibrium. The ship’s AI waited the programmed eleven seconds before suggesting again, “Let’s play a game.” The one sure thing Null gained so far on this voyage was the experiential knowledge of the duration of eleven seconds. He often used that time to contemplate why the engineers picked a female voice as his Spaceflight AI Aide–Saia. He reasoned that they should have given him the flexibility to choose at will…change at will. It was a long voyage, over…

Introduction to Supermarket Science Materials — Free Materials for K-8

My partner and I developed science, math, and writing curriculum for kindergarten to about 8th grade. We own the copyright on all of it. I’m looking to make it all available online for free for parents to use. Because most households with kids have more than one kid — kids in different grades. If parents and their kids ALL have to work from home, it puts tremendous pressure on computing resources. Who’s has the priority to be on a computer? A parent to do work? A high schooler studying for his SATs? A third-grader? How can a limited resource be divided amicably? Well, our materials were designed to be downloaded and printed. Kids could do activities with pen and paper and perhaps submit images or movies of their projects to share with others online. If we can make the tech work, we have the materials! The presentation by the Science Buddies not only introduced exciting science concepts to my 3rd grade students, but it inspired them to create their own science experiments. — Lisa McLaughlin, 3rd grade elementary school teacher How It All Began My sons went to a local public elementary school in San Francisco. We could walk to…

How to Use Supermarket Science Materials

In brief, Supermarket Science is a collection of books designed to teach science, arts, and math in a fun and practical way to elementary school children. It draws on local resources, involves parents, and closely ties materials to Common Core Standards. There are sections written for educators — teachers and parents — and those aimed directly at students. These materials are fun and easy to use. All activities have been tested in real classrooms over a period of 6 years. Anecdotally, we learned that in California the 5th-grade science STAR scores were greatly improved after students went through the Supermarket Science program. Supermarket Science materials don’t only include the activities and books but teach a general framework that the whole family (and school) can adapt to teaching. Even when only the older kids participate, the younger children — the “Science Buddies” — get the benefits of science show-and-tells and organized science performances that involve the whole family and improve learning comprehension and enjoyment. My students were completely involved in the various activities we did. The math and science of it had “real” meaning to them! — Jeannetta L. Mitchell, 6th grade math and science teacher Supermarket Science materials are designed…
